TOKYO: The Largest City In The World

Tokyo is the capital, the largest city, and the most populous metropolitan area in the Greater Tokyo Area as well as the most populous metropolitan area in the world and most populous prefecture of Japan. It’s the political and economic centre of the country as well as the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the national government.

Tokyo is the largest urban economy in the world by gross domestic product and is categorized as an Alpha city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Below are some other interesting facts about the city of Tokyo.

1. Tokyo is the world’s most populous metropolitan area
As of 2021, the prefecture has an estimated population of 14.04 million. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world, with an estimated 37.468 million residents in 2018. As of December 31, 2016, the population of Christians in Japan numbered 1.9 million, according to a statistical study and roughly 60% of the Christian population live in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture.

2. Tokyo was originally named Edo.
Edo is the former name of Tokyo. It was the seat of power for the Tokugawa shogunate which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. The Edo Museum in Tokyo memorializes the history and culture of that era.

3. Tokyo first held the Olympics in 1964.
This year won’t be the first time that Tokyo has hosted the Olympics. It was also home to the Games in 1967. The country’s athletes won sixteen gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals, coming in third place behind the United States in first, and the Soviet Union in second.

4. Tokyo Tower is one of the city’s most famous landmarks.
The Tokyo Tower was modelled after the Eiffel Tower in Paris and opened in 1958. It measures 333 metres (1,092 feet) tall and was the tallest structure in Japan until the Tokyo Skytree, which is 634 metres (2,082 feet) tall, surpassed it in 2010. Visitors to the city can go to the top of both structures for a spectacular view.
