“RHEMA”

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word (rhema) that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

Rhema, in its biblical context, refers to the spoken, living, and active word of God as it is personally and directly revealed to an individual.

Unlike logos, which often denotes the general word or message of God as recorded in Scripture, rhema emphasizes a specific word or utterance that is made alive and relevant by the Holy Spirit to a particular moment or situation.

In the New Testament, rhema (ῥῆμα) conveys the idea of an utterance, a spoken word, or a declaration. It is often used to describe a timely, dynamic word from God that brings life, guidance, encouragement, and direction.

Rhema is God speaking into the present, addressing immediate needs, decisions, or circumstances.

In Matthew 4:4, the Lord Jesus quotes Deuteronomy as He responds to Satan’s temptation: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word (rhema) that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Here, rhema highlights the sustaining and life-giving power of God’s spoken word, which nourishes and strengthens the believer far beyond physical sustenance.

Ephesians 6:17 also uses rhema in the context of spiritual warfare: “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word (rhema) of God.”

The rhema of God functions as an offensive weapon, a precise and timely word that equips the believer to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy.

Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word (rhema) of God.” Faith arises when a person hears God’s voice personally through His word, quickened by the Holy Spirit.

Rhema imparts fresh faith, insight, and clarity, often illuminating Scripture or delivering a prophetic revelation that speaks directly to one’s heart.

Be attentive to the rhema of God. Let His living word direct your steps, build your faith, and your spirit in every season.
